June 21, 2005 David Courtemanche, the Mayor of Sudbury recently endorsed the efforts of SAMSSA in his annual report to the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce on June 9th 2005.
The Mayor emphasized the real growth that was occurring in a number of sectors of the community but was extremely pleased with the efforts of the expertise and knowledge being exhibited in the mining supply and service sector.
Mike Castron, President of SAMSSA said; "recognition, and endorsements in the Mayor's comments are appreciative including his belief that the mining supply and service sector is one of the most of the important drivers of the regional economy. "
The following excerpt from his speech clearly outlines his position on SAMSSA and this dynamic sector:
"What makes me even more optimistic is that today, we're building upon generations of mining expertise, and using that know-how to teach others around the world how to mine better, faster, in more environmentally sound ways. At the same time, we're now using our expertise to build the tools of this trade, better than anyone else can, and selling those tools to companies and countries, around the world. Sudbury has long been a world leader in mining technique and technology. Now we're capitalizing on our power position, and leveraging it to build the kind of prosperity, here at home, that lasts. Because, while the prosperity of our own mining sector may fluctuate, one thing is certain: somewhere in the world, on any given day, someone is hitting pay dirt. And they'll need our tools and our expertise in order to reap their rewards. That's why we're building up our mining supply and service sector - so we can reap the enduring reward of economic stability. It is the cooperative leadership of organizations such as the Sudbury and Area Mining Service & Supply Association that is leading the way. The mining supply and services sector now employs significantly more workers than the primary mining, smelting and refining side of the industry in North eastern Ontario. These are the small to medium sized companies that are driving real growth. This sector has been mobilized like never before. Our post-secondary institutions are developing new mining related programs and teams. We have the new locally produced Mining Solutions Journal being distributed around the world. And of course, we have made the mining supply and services sector our #1 engine for economic growth." SAMSSA has grown incrementally and now represents over 60 member companies in Sudbury and North Bay. The SAMSSA web site is an active e-site for requests and viewing and over 1 million hits have been recorded during the past two years. What is most important is the number of hits from countries globally, which averages over 25 monthly.
Member sites are identified on the multilingual web page at www.samssa.com and visitors can view company products and services by clicking on their personal web sites for further details.
SAMSSA is proud of its members and its impact on the overall economy in the region. The increased employment rates have resulted in higher incomes for employees in this sector.
The booming commodities economy has provided a number of domestic and international opportunities for SAMSSA members in the past months. Providing its expertise worldwide is fast becoming an important component of business plans for many members.
SAMSSA members are planning to attend two major trade shows in the fall of 2005, namely in China and Mexico.
